Abdominal Pain & Pelvic Pain

As the name suggests, it is the chronic pain that occurs in the area between the rib cage and pelvis, also called the belly. Whereas pelvic pain is felt in the lower abdomen, lower back, and perineum. The pain could be coming in spasms or continuous, and when it presents as acute pain, it can be an emergency.

Causes

Abdominal and pelvic pain can result from a wide range of conditions and disorders. In case of abdominal pain, it can arise from visceral diseases like appendicitis, cholecystitis, pancreatitis, or infections such as tuberculosis, and cancer of internal organs. Pelvic pain, on the other hand, arises from the pelvic organs such as the terminal intestine, rectum, urinary bladder, uterus and ovary. Other than that, pelvic and abdominal pains may be neuropathic in origin; arising after surgeries for hernia, gallbladder, pancreas etc.

Diagnosis

Abdominal and Pelvic pain can be confirmed by undergoing one or more diagnostic tests, as recommended by your healthcare professional. These include:

  1. Blood, stool, or urine tests
  2. Colonoscopy or a test that examines the large intestine
  3. Cystoscopy to examine the bladder
  4. Laparoscopy to examine the abdomen and pelvic region
  5. MRI scans to produce detailed images inside the abdomen and pelvic region
  6. Sigmoidoscopy to investigate the lower portion of the colon
  7. Ultrasound to produce images of organs and other structures inside the abdomen and pelvic region
  8. Upper endoscopy to examine the esophagus, stomach, and upper small intestine
Treatment
